Yesterday was a vacation day, with my friend LB. We climbed a bit of Thunder Ridge, talking as much as we walked. His American chestnut association jacket gave a hint of his expertise. Aha, a showy orcus:
And nearby, some little irises:
A friend recently gave me a book, "The Forager's Harvest," which I must read. I'd bet it teaches how to find these instead of buying ginger at a grocery store.
If you look closely, maybe you can see the ginger flowers at the base of each stem. [Click on the photo to make it larger.]
One of our neighbors used to hunt the woods before Christmas, to finance presents for his children.
"Where did he find ginseng?" says Virginia.
We'll never tell.
And here's the foragers' harvest, which Karen stir-fried with asparagus.
