Garden Update

It's been a couple weeks since I posted photos of my gardens, so here's an update.  The peas and onions are coming along nicely.  On the left are a couple double rows of sugar snap peas, on the right, some Wandos.  (Remember, if you want to see things better, double click on any picture.) The next bed to the right is full of Wandos like these, ten double rows, so in another month I hope to be busy shelling.  Would you like to help?

You might notice that the garden beds are now mulched, thanks to last year's Asplundh power line workmen and frequent trips to Boxerwood Gardens in Lexington.

We're now harvesting lettuce daily, which will continue into December if all goes well.  My plan is to plant lettuces every 3-4 weeks so we always have new plants coming along.

Last year, this worked well even during the summer because I planted some in the shade under our ash tree, which is the garden bed in the left foreground of the picture that appears just below this paragraph.  That garden bed now hosts a couple plantings of spinach and carrots, beets, and along the edge, garlic.  I've left plenty of room for later lettuce.

Now here, farther South, are beds of strawberries, potatoes, more garlic, and at the far end, honeyberries.  To the right our grapes have begun to leaf and beyond the grapes, the Doyle's thornless blackberry plants are thickening.

Here's another view of the grapes.

"Don't forget your greenhouse," says Virginia.  "How many tomato plants do you have in there?"

"Eighty," I say, "plus -- I realize this is kind of silly, they grow so quickly when directly seeded -- I have cucurbits in there, that is, cucumbers and squashes.  Also, green peppers, Brussels sprouts, lavendar and artichokes.  And see the sunflower growing tall?"

"What I like most," says Virginia, "are the cucumbers growing out of the holes Karen drilled in the white columns that support the shelf.

  1. I know I see it every day but I'm still awestruck by this year's gardens. Keep up the good work.

  2. Oh thank god, pictures, while I love your blog, my A D D keeps me drifting away into the day we come and I get to photograph, well, just about everything. Though I must say, for the most part, I don't think I could do better than you've been doing.
